Job Title: Chief Miller - Grains
Reference: Chief Miller/Grains/Lagos

Responsible For:
Milling, Flour and Bran Packing, Hygiene

Key Result Areas:
  • Quality and consistency of finished products
  • Mill performance
  • Seeking continuous operational improvement
  • Effective management of raw material, intermediate and finished product stock levels
  • Cost control (notably labour, energy, maintenance)
  • Site Hygiene

  • Direct management and motivation of production team
Responsibilities:

Employees:
  • Defining and agreeing job responsibilities with all subordinates. Setting targets and monitoring performance (formally and informally) of all responsible personnel.
  • Maintain the welfare and morale of employees.
  • Enforce discipline and effect dismissals as necessary within the guidelines of the company disciplinary procedure and employment legislation.
  • Selection and appointment of new employees.
Production Unit
  • Ensure all areas operate efficiently within agreed financial budgets. To seek continual improvement.
  • Purchase of all materials necessary to maintain efficient production, handling and packaging of flour and flour based products (excluding grain and gluten).
  • Control stock levels (through line managers/supervisors) of both raw materials and finished products to ensure efficient response to product specifications and volume requirements (in line with forecasts and new product development) can be made.
  • Maintain and monitor production in respect of output yield/extraction capacity against set targets. React to variances.
  • Ensure (through line managers) efficient maintenance of all plant and buildings under remit. (This will include use of a preventative maintenance scheme to ensure minimum breakdown times on any processes.)
Hygiene, Health & Safety
  • Ensure the Health and Safety of all subordinates within Company guidelines and current legislation.
  • To hold regular Health and Safety Meetings as Chairman of the Site Committee and to implement agreed recommendations from this and the annual contracted audits.
  • Ensure all functional management are aware of the correct codes of practice, both statutory and advisory, that govern accepted standards of safe operation at all premises. Ensure production plant causes the minimum of dust and noise both internally and externally.
  • By regular site inspection and training, ensure full employee awareness of safe working practices and their role in maintaining the required standards.
  • Ensure hygiene standards in all areas are maintained to the highest standards at a minimum above those required by BRC.
  • Ensure absolute product safety through careful management of all process lines.
Financial:
  • Purchase materials within the guidelines of purchase order procedure.
  • Ensure that all stocks are maintained at minimum levels. (This includes wheat and breakdown spares).
  • Contribute to the forming of operating budgets.
  • Raise capital expenditure and special maintenance forms for projects over USD1,500. Seek justification for each project. Manage these projects to budget and time.
  • Properly control departmental overhead expenditure and be able to analyse and report variances.
  • Authorise all expenditure by subordinates.
General:
  • Manage external contractors in a cost effective manner for cleaning, refuse disposal, gardening and other routine services. Seek to challenge their costs and performance to ensure cheap yet quality service.
  • Ensure perimeter and yard areas are well maintained.
  • Through managers, maintain and administer all personnel records and systems relating to employees (excluding records of sickness, absenteeism and holidays, recorded in the General Office).
  • Through respective managers, ensure the safe keeping of all company agreements, financial instruments etc.
  • To encourage good communication through the plant workplace, through Team Briefing, formal and informal discussions.
  • Through managers identify personnel training needs. Actively promote training and personal development on site. (Costs to be controlled within agreed budgets).
  • Milling experience of over 20-25 years is mandatory with at least last 10 years as Chief Miller.
